Tyggwhistle wood is a 1.2 hectare site on private land accessed from Shield Hill, Haltwhistle.
The wood was planted in 2014 and consists of 12 native broadleaf trees, all indigenous to Northumberland.
The wood is situated on an inclined site which has a small stream at its lower edge. The site is rocky, being situated on the rising edge of the Whinn Sill, a plate of igneous dolerite rock. This creates varied planting conditions with significant implications for the localised viability of some species. Failure rates during the initial years will inform the planting decisions going forward.
